[[Elbridge Gerry]] established a trading post called Fort Gerry on the [[South Platte River]] near the present-day town of Kersey, Colorado in the 1830s. He had two Native American wives who helped him run the post. There were 474 households, out of which 48.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% were non-families. 17.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.33.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 34.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,333, and the median income for a family was $45,329. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $23,148 for females.
