== History ==
The town was first settled around 1793 by [[New England]]ers and was unoccupied by settlers during the [[American Revolution]].

In 1803, the town was created from part of the [[Blenheim, New York|Town of Blenheim]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|43.4|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|43.3|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}  (0.28%) is water.

The western town line is the border of [[Delaware County, New York|Delaware County]].

The [[West Branch Delaware River|West Branch]] of the [[Delaware River]] originates in Jefferson. The [[population density]] was 11.5/km<sup>2</sup> (29.7/sq&nbsp;mi). There were 904 housing units at an average density of {{convert|20.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 96.42% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.71% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.16% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.56% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.17% of the population.

There were 520 households, out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $43,269. Males had a median income of $34,875 versus $25,417 for females.
