[[U.S. Route 14 in Minnesota|U.S. Highway 14]] serves as a main route in the community, running east–west, south of Janesville.  County Road 3 runs north–south through the town.  There is one disabled stoplight, now a four way stop, in Janesville at the intersection of County Road 3 (Main Street) and old Highway 14.

The city of Janesville was established in 1856.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|1289.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 958 housing units at an average density of {{convert|547.4|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 98.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.4% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.3% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.2% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.3% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.8% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.3% of the population.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.72% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.09% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.38% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.19% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.62% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.00% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.61% of the population.

The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,667, and the median income for a family was $51,111. Males had a median income of $31,675 versus $21,492 for females.
