== History ==
The town was formed from part of the town of [[Cambridge (town), New York|Cambridge]] in 1815. Cambridge Valley Livestock is the longest running business in the town.

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|37.5|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|37.2|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.3|sqmi|km2}}  (0.83%) is water.

Much of the northern town line is defined by the Batten Kill, a tributary of the Hudson River.  The eastern town line is the state border with [[Vermont]].

[[New York State Route 22|NY Route 22]] is a north-south highway through the middle of Jackson.  [[New York State Route 313|NY Route 313]] crosses the town toward Vermont.

As of the [[census]] of 2000, there were 1,718 people, 692 households, and 489 families residing in the town.  The population density was {{convert|46.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,077 housing units at an average density of {{convert|29.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.26% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.81% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.17% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.47% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.06% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.06% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.16% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.11% of the population.<ref name="GR2" />

There were 692 households, out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.90.<ref name="GR2" />

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males.<ref name="GR2" />

The median income for a household in the town was $41,490, and the median income for a family was $43,565. Males had a median income of $33,438 versus $21,290 for females.
