==History==

Jacksboro was founded in 1806 as a permanent county seat for the newly created Campbell County.  The initial property for the town square was deeded by Hugh Montgomery, one of the earliest settlers in the area.  The town was originally known as Walnut Grove, but was renamed "Jacksonboro" in honor of [[Andrew Jackson]] in 1819.  The name was later shortened to "Jacksboro."<ref name=hellman />

==Geography==
Jacksboro is located at {{coord|36.331511|-84.188793|type:city_region:US|format=dms|display=inline}}.<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> The town situated near the "corner" of an L-shaped section of Powell Valley created by the intersection of Cumberland Mountain, a long ridge which runs in a northeast-southwest direction, and Cross Mountain, a {{convert|3534|ft|m|adj=on}} summit which rises prominently to the west.  Big Creek and Cove Creek &mdash; which traverse the eastern and western sections of Jacksboro respectively &mdash; are both part of the Norris Lake system of the [[Clinch River]] watershed.

Jacksboro is concentrated along [[U.S. Route 25W in Tennessee|U.S. Route 25W]], approximately {{convert|2|mi|km}} northeast of [[Interstate 75 in Tennessee|Interstate 75]] and a mile northeast of [[Cove Lake State Park]].  [[Caryville, Tennessee|Caryville]] lies to the southwest, and [[LaFollette, Tennessee|LaFollette]] lies to the northeast.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,887 people, 767 households, and 550 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|723.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 827 housing units at an average density of {{convert|316.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 98.04% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.11% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.32% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.11% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.90% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.53% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.48% of the population.

There were 767 households, out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.80.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.6% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
