In 1963, two [[United States Air Force]] [[Boeing B-47 Stratojet|B-47E]] [[Strategic bomber|bombers]] based at [[Schilling Air Force Base]] near [[Salina, Kansas]], collided over western Iowa on August 19 and [[Boeing B-47 Stratojet#Accidents and incidents|crashed]] several miles apart near Irwin.
