[[general (U.S.)|Gen.]] [[Green Clay]] established the town of Irvine on {{convert|20.5|acre|ha}} of his land on January 28, 1812,<ref name=sos/> four years after [[Estill County, Kentucky|Estill County]] was separated from [[Madison County, Kentucky|Madison County]]. It was named for [[colonel (U.S.)|Col]]. The racial makeup of the city was 99.26% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.04% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.04% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.46% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.56% of the population.

There were 1,259 households, out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.82.

22.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,286, and the median income for a family was $25,046. Males had a median income of $28,988 versus $17,194 for females.
