It has been informally named the "Pine Bend impact" and has been dated to 500 million years ago. Candidates need not be selected or endorsed by political parties, and by state law no such endorsement appears on the ballot. The mayor is elected every two years while council members are elected every four. Terms are staggered with two council members elected one election cycle and the two others two years later. The non-mayoral seats are elected in pairs, giving voters the chance to vote for up to two candidates.
