== History ==

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by [[Native Americans in the United States|Native Americans]].  In 1803, most of [[History of Kansas|modern Kansas]] was secured by the United States as part of the [[Louisiana Purchase]].  In 1854, the [[Kansas Territory]] was organized, then in 1861 [[Kansas]] became the 34th [[U.S. state]].  In 1867, [[McPherson County, Kansas|McPherson County]] was founded.

It was founded in 1887 as '''Aiken'''.{{citation needed|date=March 2011}}  It was renamed '''Inman''', in 1889, after Major [[Henry Inman (U.S. Army officer and author)|Henry Inman]],<ref name="Hardorff">{{cite book|author=Richard G. Later, it was extended to [[Tucumcari, New Mexico]] and [[El Paso, Texas]].  It foreclosed in 1891 and taken over by [[Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway]], which shut down in 1980 and reorganized as [[Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad]], merged in 1988 with [[Missouri Pacific Railroad]], merged in 1997 with [[Union Pacific Railroad]].  Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island".

The racial makeup of the city was 96.0% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.1% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.4% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.3% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.7% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 2.5% from two or more races. The racial makeup of the city was 98.42% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.35% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.44% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.79% from two or more races. There were 494 households, out of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 4.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was [[United States dollar|US$]]31,648, and the median income for a family was $40,804. Males had a median income of $31,875 versus $19,615 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $17,290. About 2.9% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
