The township was organized by the [[Grand Traverse County, Michigan|Grand Traverse County]] board of supervisors under the name "'''North Climax Township'''" in April 1867 when Benzie County was still attached to Grand Traverse for administrative purposes. As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,587 people, 620 households, and 437 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|44.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 723 housing units at an average density of {{convert|20.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 95.84% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.50% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.64% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.13% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.25% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.64% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.01% of the population.

There were 620 households, out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the township the population was spread out, with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $38,125, and the median income for a family was $40,750. Males had a median income of $29,509 versus $21,284 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $15,935.  About 5.7% of families and 7.8% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 10.8% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
