'''Hunter''' (also called '''Stoney Creek''') is a [[census-designated place]] (CDP) and [[unincorporated community]] located northeast of [[Elizabethton]] in [[Carter County, Tennessee]], along [[Tennessee State Route 91]] and the [[Watauga River]]. Its population was 1,854 as of the [[2010 United States Census|2010 census]].<ref name="GR8">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov |publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]] |accessdate=May 14, 2011 |title=U.S. Census website }}</ref> It is part of the [[Johnson City metropolitan area|Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area]], which is a component of the [[Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area]] &ndash; commonly known as the "[[Tri-Cities, Tennessee|Tri-Cities]]" region. Hunter is a suburb of Elizabethton.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the CDP has a total area of {{convert|6.411|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|6.386|sqmi|km2}} of it is land and {{convert|0.025|sqmi|km2}} of it (0.39%) is water.

The [[Watauga River]] forms a southern boundary for the Hunter community, while the [[Holston Mountain]] forms a northern boundary.

The population density was {{convert|254.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 729 housing units at an average density of {{convert|118.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the CDP was 99.17% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.13% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.06% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.13% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.06% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.45% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.15% of the population.

There were 689 households, out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.71.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $30,968, and the median income for a family was $37,981. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,668 for females. About 5.6% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 9.7% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
