==Geography==
Houtzdale is bordered to the north by the borough of [[Brisbin, Pennsylvania|Brisbin]]. [[Pennsylvania Route 53]] passes through Houtzdale, leading east {{convert|5|mi|0}} to [[Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania|Osceola Mills]] and west {{convert|9|mi|0}} to [[Glen Hope, Pennsylvania|Glen Hope]]. [[Pennsylvania Route 153]] leads north from Houtzdale {{convert|17|mi}} to [[Clearfield, Pennsylvania|Clearfield]], the county seat.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 941 people, 380 households, and 275 families residing in the borough. The population density was {{convert|2,682.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 432 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,231.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the borough was 99.57% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 0.21% from two or more races.

There were 380 households, out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the borough, the population was spread out, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $29,219, and the median income for a family was $33,309. Males had a median income of $27,039 versus $20,438 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the borough was $14,177. About 9.3% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.

==Government==
The borough council consists of seven members, who are elected in the general elections, and serve four year terms with seats coming available every two years.{{Citation needed|date=May 2021}} The mayor serves a four-year term for ceremonial duty.{{Citation needed|date=May 2021}}  As of 2020, the mayor was Izen Lingenfelter.<ref name="Article-20200430"/>

The community is served by [[Moshannon Valley School District]], which has two schools:
