==History==
Homestown, originally known as South Wardell, was one of ten communities constructed by the [[Farm Security Administration]] for displaced [[sharecropper]]s and tenant farmers following the January 1939 roadside sharecropper demonstration in Southeast Missouri. The racial makeup of the city was 2.65% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 95.36% [[Black (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.66% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 1.32% from two or more races.

There were 53 households, of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 28.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 15.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 61 households, out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 36.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.31.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 35.9% under the age of 18, 13.8% from 18 to 24, 13.3% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $12,143, and the median income for a family was $11,607. Males had a median income of $19,250 versus $17,500 for females.
