Hoffman was [[plat]]ted in 1887, and named for Robert C. The [[population density]] was {{convert|329.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 325 housing units at an average density of {{convert|157.0|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 95.7% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.1% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.4% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.6% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.6% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.3% from two or more races. The racial makeup of the city was 98.36% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.45% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.89% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 0.30% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.15% of the population.

There were 274 households, out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.3% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 31.0% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,464, and the median income for a family was $42,955. Males had a median income of $31,818 versus $18,333 for females. About 1.9% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 14.6% of those age 65 or over.
