==History==

Hillsboro began in the late 1830s as a small community known as "Gilmersville," which was located east of the current town.  The name was inspired by a family of early settlers.  When the railroad was constructed through the area in the 1860s, the town shifted to its current location along the tracks.  The town developed throughout the latter half of the 19th century as an important refueling stop for trains and a local shipping center.  The town's name was eventually changed to "Hillsborough," and the current spelling was adopted in 1891.<ref name=kaetz />

The population density was {{convert|317.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 249 housing units at an average density of {{convert|129.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 14.64% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 82.24% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 1.81% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.16% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 221 households, out of which 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 23.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
