The Civil Township of Hecla (which includes a portion of South Dakota political township-128-N by range-61-W east of the James River) surrounds the municipal boundary of the City of Hecla. [[Liberty Township, Brown County, South Dakota|Liberty Township]] is located to west of the City of Hecla and includes a portion of South Dakota political township-128-N by range-61-W west of the James River in addition to township-128-N by range-62-W.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.4% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.4% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.4% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.8% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.3% of the population.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.04% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.32% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 0.64% from two or more races.

There were 147 households, out of which 21.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.71.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.1% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 19.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 29.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
