Settlement began before 1812.

The town of Harrisburg (originally "Harrisburgh") was formed in 1803 from the towns of [[Lowville (town), New York|Lowville]], [[Champion, New York|Champion]] (in [[Jefferson County, New York|Jefferson County]]), and [[Mexico (town), New York|Mexico]] (in [[Oswego County, New York|Oswego County]]). After its formation, Harrisburg gave up land to form the town of [[Denmark, New York|Denmark]] (1807) and the town of [[Pinckney, New York|Pinckney]] (1808).

==Geography==

[[New York State Route 177]] crosses the town (east-west), and [[New York State Route 26]] passes along the eastern part of the town. [[New York State Route 12]] is an east–west highway through the middle of Harrisburg.

The [[Deer River (Black River tributary)|Deer River]] flows northward from the northwestern section  of Harrisburg.

The population density was {{convert|10.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 201 housing units at an average density of {{convert|5.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.11% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.47% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.24% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.47% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.24% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 0.47% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.24% of the population.

There were 139 households, out of which 38.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.73.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 33.6% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 112.6 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 123.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,750, and the median income for a family was $37,250. Males had a median income of $23,125 versus $21,071 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $13,785.  About 11.9% of families and 13.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 21.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
