== History ==
First settlement began ''circa'' 1809. Harmony was established in 1816 from a part of the town of [[Chautauqua, New York|Chautauqua]]. The size of Harmony was reduced when the newer towns of [[Busti, New York|Busti]] and [[North Harmony, New York|North Harmony]] were formed.

The population density was {{convert|51.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 931 housing units at an average density of {{convert|20.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.95% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.38% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.26% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.09% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.13% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.20% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.47% of the population.

There were 837 households, out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% were non-families. 16.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,578, and the median income for a family was $39,167. Males had a median income of $31,927 versus $19,122 for females. The Barker family were early settlers of Harmony Township, with Postmaster's father having served in the Union Army of the Civil War [Private in T Company, 9th Regiment NY Cavalry, enlisted on August 10, 1864].
