Hanging Rock is a part of the [[Huntington, West Virginia|Huntington]]-[[Ashland, Kentucky|Ashland]], [[West Virginia|WV]]-[[Kentucky|KY]]-[[Ohio|OH]], [[Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area|Metropolitan Statistical Area]] (MSA).

==History==
Hanging Rock had its start in 1820 when European Americans built a [[blast furnace]] at the site.<ref>{{cite book|last=Overman|first=William Daniel|title=Ohio Town Names|url=https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015015361465;view=1up;seq=73|year=1958|publisher=Atlantic Press|location=Akron, OH|page=57}}</ref>  Village development followed as workers came to the furnace. The [[population density]] was {{convert|394.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 102 housing units at an average density of {{convert|182.1|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the village was 98.6% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]] and 1.4% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 95 households, of which 23.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.4% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.60.

The racial makeup of the village was 99.64% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], and 0.36% from two or more races.

There were 109 households, out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.9% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $30,417, and the median income for a family was $38,125. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $35,625 for females.
