The eastern town line is the border of [[Herkimer County, New York|Herkimer County]], and the western town line is defined by the [[Black River (New York)|Black River]].

The eastern half of the town is inside the [[Adirondack Park]].

The population density was {{convert|14.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,260 housing units at an average density of {{convert|13.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.07% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.37% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.07% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 0.59% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 533 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families.  21.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,179, and the median income for a family was $39,028.  Males had a median income of $32,596 versus $22,857 for females.  The [[per capita income]] for the town was $15,838.  About 4.7% of families and 8.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.
