Gray was founded in the 1850s and named for local resident James M. [[Monticello, Georgia|Monticello]] is {{convert|25|mi}} to the northwest via [[Georgia State Route 11|State Route 11]], [[Milledgeville, Georgia|Milledgeville]] is {{convert|19|mi}} to the east via [[Georgia State Route 22|State Route 22]], and [[Gordon, Georgia|Gordon]] is {{convert|15|mi}} to the southeast via [[Georgia State Route 18|State Route 18]].
