The township was named in 1867 for General [[Ulysses S. ==Geography==
The township is in northwestern Mason County, bordered to the north by [[Manistee County, Michigan|Manistee County]] and to the west by [[Lake Michigan]]. [[U.S. Route 31]] runs north-south along the eastern border of the township. According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|48.92|sqmi|km2|2}}, of which {{convert|48.73|sqmi|km2|2}} are land and {{convert|0.19|sqmi|km2|2}}, or 0.39%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/>

The township hall is located on Hoague Road near the intersection of LaSalle Road.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 850 people, 325 households, and 249 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|17.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 499 housing units at an average density of {{convert|10.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 95.29% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.24% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.41% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.29% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.76% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.59% of the population.

There were 325 households, out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the township the population was spread out, with 24.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 107.8 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $39,018, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $36,389 versus $21,607 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $16,611.  About 8.2% of families and 11.4% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 11.8% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.
