This caused the government to issue a statement on the harmlessness and the scientific value of such experiments. In 1815, [[Emmanuel de Grouchy, Marquis de Grouchy|Marshal Grouchy]] arrived in Gonesse in the course of the [[War of the Sixth Coalition]], with 40,000 troops and 120 artillery pieces. On 2 July, the [[Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington|Duke of Wellington]] made his headquarters at the commune.
