Gibson was founded in 1858 as the seat of the newly formed Glascock County. GA 102 leads west {{convert|6|mi|0}} to [[Mitchell, Georgia|Mitchell]] and east {{convert|10|mi|0}} to [[Stapleton, Georgia|Stapleton]], while GA 171 leads north {{convert|13|mi}} to [[Warrenton, Georgia|Warrenton]] and south {{convert|24|mi}} to [[Louisville, Georgia|Louisville]]. [[Augusta, Georgia|Augusta]], {{convert|44|mi}} to the northeast, is the closest large city.
