The first settlers arrived ''circa'' 1796. German was founded as the "Town of Brakel" in 1806 from part of the town of [[DeRuyter, New York|DeRuyter]] (now in [[Madison County, New York|Madison County]]). Later the town was reduced by the formation of newer towns:  [[Otselic, New York|Otselic]] (1817), [[Lincklaen, New York|Lincklaen]] (1823), and part of [[Pitcher, New York|Pitcher]] (1827).

The 1865 population of German was 778.

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|73.7|km2|disp=flip}}, of which {{convert|73.6|km2|disp=flip}} is land and {{convert|0.1|km2|disp=flip|2}}, or 0.11%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

The western town line is the border of [[Cortland County, New York|Cortland County]].

The population density was {{convert|13.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 227 housing units at an average density of {{convert|8.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.09% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.79% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.32% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.26% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.53% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.32% of the population.

There were 135 households, out of which 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 32.3% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 112.4 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,288, and the median income for a family was $36,563. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $17,361 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $11,557.  About 14.7% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 21.3% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
