The population was 648 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]],<ref name="Census 2020"/> down from 974 in [[2010 United States census|2010]]. The town is on the southern border of the county.

== History ==
The town was first settled around 1804. It was organized from part of the town of [[DeRuyter (town), New York|DeRuyter]] in 1815.

The [[Spirit House (Georgetown, New York)|Spirit House]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 2006.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|version=2009a}}</ref>

==Geography==
The southern town line is the border of [[Chenango County, New York|Chenango County]]. [[New York State Route 26]] crosses the town, leading northeast {{convert|16|mi}} to [[Madison, New York|Madison]] and southwest {{convert|36|mi}} to [[Whitney Point, New York|Whitney Point]]. [[New York State Route 80|State Route 80]] also crosses the town, joining NY 26 in the southern part of town; it leads west-northwest {{convert|16|mi}} to [[Fabius (village), New York|Fabius]] and southeast {{convert|16|mi}} to [[Sherburne (village), New York|Sherburne]].

According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the town of Georgetown has a total area of {{convert|40.2|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}, or 0.25%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2024"/> The [[Otselic River]] flows through the center of the town, running southwest to join the [[Tioughnioga River]] at Whitney Point. While most of the town is drained by the Otselic, some of the western side of town drains toward the East Branch of the Tioughnioga, while the southeastern part of town is drained by Lebanon Brook, South Lebanon Brook, and Pleasant Brook, all tributaries of the [[Chenango River]].

The population density was {{convert|23.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 315 housing units at an average density of {{convert|7.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 79.81% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 15.54% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.42% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 3.59% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.63% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 7.51% of the population.

There were 249 households, out of which 34.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 21.6% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 40.2% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 172.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 189.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,963, and the median income for a family was $38,804. Males had a median income of $21,726 versus $22,000 for females. About 7.5% of families and 11.4% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.
