==History==

The Gainesboro vicinity was a popular destination for [[longhunter|long hunters]] as early as the 1770s, as natural salt licks drew rich game to the area. In the 1790s, [[Avery's Trace]] passed nearby, with travellers along the road lodging at [[Fort Blount]] about 10 miles to the west.  Gainesboro was named after [[United States Army|U.S. Army]] [[Brevet (military)|Brevet]] [[Major general (United States)|Major General]] [[Edmund P. Gaines]] (1777–1849). As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 879 people, 373 households, and 208 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|562.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 430 housing units at an average density of {{convert|275.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 98.29% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.98% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.11% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.46% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.34% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.80% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.57% of the population.

There were 373 households, of which 16.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.0% were non-families. 38.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
