In 1876 he was appointed extraordinary professor of classical [[philology]] at [[University of Kiel|Kiel]], and ordinary professor in 1881. In 1892 he accepted a professorship at [[University of Halle-Wittenberg|Halle]], where he later died.<ref name="EB1911">{{EB1911|inline=1|wstitle=Blass, Friedrich |volume=4 |page=44}}</ref> He frequently visited England, and was intimately acquainted with leading British scholars.
