== Early life ==

== Education and career ==
Buttel earned his B.S. (1970) and M.S. in sociology (1972) degrees at the [[University of Wisconsin–Madison]], his master's degree in forestry and environmental studies at [[Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies|Yale University]] and his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Wisconsin.<ref name=uw>[https://web.archive.org/web/20060829080223/http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/senate/2005/0404/1843(mem_res).pdf "Memorial Resolution of the Faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison: On the Death of Professor Frederick H. At the latter, he directed the Biology and Society Program.
