The population was 714 at the 2010 census, an increase from the 2000 figure of 621. Fort Duchesne was originally a fort, established by the United States Army in 1886 and closed in 1912. The community developed around it within the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, established in 1864. Several bands of Ute were forced on to the reservation about 1880. The headquarters of the Ute Indian Tribe are located here. Its reservation includes much of Uintah and nearby counties. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.7 square miles (19.8 km<sup>2</sup>), of which 7.0 square miles (18.2 km<sup>2</sup>) is land and 0.6 square mile (1.7 km<sup>2</sup>) (8.36%) is water. ==Demographics== {| class="wikitable sortable collapsible" style="font-size: 90%;" |- ! As a result, Fort Duchesne has a cold-semi arid near cold desert climate instead of a subarctic climate despite the frigid winters. Precipitation, although very minimal, can be seen throughout the year with the late summer and early fall months seeing more than any other month of the year. However, there isn't a month that averages more than 1 inch. {{Weather box | width = auto | collapsed = yes | single line = yes | location = Fort Duchesne, Utah (1991–2020 normals, extremes 1887–1893, 1902–present) | Jan record high F = 60 | Feb record high F = 67 | Mar record high F = 82 | Apr record high F = 87 | May record high F = 95 | Jun record high F = 105 | Jul record high F = 107 | Aug record high F = 106 | Sep record high F = 100 | Oct record high F = 89 | Nov record high F = 76 | Dec record high F = 72 | year record high F = |Jan avg record high F = 44.0 |Feb avg record high F = 52.9 |Mar avg record high F = 69.1 |Apr avg record high F = 80.5 |May avg record high F = 87.3 |Jun avg record high F = 97.3 |Jul avg record high F = 99.9 |Aug avg record high F = 98.6 |Sep avg record high F = 93.4 |Oct avg record high F = 80.7 |Nov avg record high F = 63.4 |Dec avg record high F = 48.6 |year avg record high F = 101.4 | Jan high F = 28.6 | Feb high F = 37.5 | Mar high F = 53.2 | Apr high F = 63.2 | May high F = 73.0 | Jun high F = 84.6 | Jul high F = 92.0 | Aug high F = 89.2 | Sep high F = 79.2 | Oct high F = 64.4 | Nov high F = 47.2 | Dec high F = 31.7 | year high F = 62.0 | Jan mean F = 16.7 | Feb mean F = 25.2 | Mar mean F = 38.8 | Apr mean F = 47.2 | May mean F = 56.3 | Jun mean F = 65.9 | Jul mean F = 73.6 | Aug mean F = 71.0 | Sep mean F = 61.8 | Oct mean F = 48.7 | Nov mean F = 34.3 | Dec mean F = 20.6 | year mean F = 46.7 | Jan low F = 4.7 | Feb low F = 12.9 | Mar low F = 24.4 | Apr low F = 31.1 | May low F = 39.5 | Jun low F = 47.2 | Jul low F = 55.1 | Aug low F = 52.9 | Sep low F = 44.4 | Oct low F = 33.1 | Nov low F = 21.4 | Dec low F = 9.5 | year low F = 31.3 |Jan avg record low F = -9.0 |Feb avg record low F = -2.2 |Mar avg record low F = 10.6 |Apr avg record low F = 19.9 |May avg record low F = 28.1 |Jun avg record low F = 37.0 |Jul avg record low F = 44.6 |Aug avg record low F = 44.3 |Sep avg record low F = 33.5 |Oct avg record low F = 20.1 |Nov avg record low F = 9.6 |Dec avg record low F = -7.3 |year avg record low F = -12.5 | Jan record low F = -40 | Feb record low F = -36 | Mar record low F = -15 | Apr record low F = 3 | May record low F = 17 | Jun record low F = 21 | Jul record low F = 26 | Aug record low F = 30 | Sep record low F = 20 | Oct record low F = -1 | Nov record low F = -19 | Dec record low F = -39 | year record low F = | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 0.38 | Feb precipitation inch = 0.44 | Mar precipitation inch = 0.40 | Apr precipitation inch = 0.45 | May precipitation inch = 0.63 | Jun precipitation inch = 0.42 | Jul precipitation inch = 0.31 | Aug precipitation inch = 0.62 | Sep precipitation inch = 0.81 | Oct precipitation inch = 0.86 | Nov precipitation inch = 0.33 | Dec precipitation inch = 0.36 | year precipitation inch = 6.01 | unit precipitation days = 0.01 in | Jan precipitation days = 4.5 | Feb precipitation days = 4.4 | Mar precipitation days = 2.9 | Apr precipitation days = 3.5 | May precipitation days = 4.3 | Jun precipitation days = 2.4 | Jul precipitation days = 3.4 | Aug precipitation days = 4.6 | Sep precipitation days = 3.8 | Oct precipitation days = 4.1 | Nov precipitation days = 2.8 | Dec precipitation days = 4.0 | year precipitation days = 44.7 | source = NOAA }} ==Notable residents== *Danny Lopez, world champion professional boxer and member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Ernie Lopez's brother *Ernie Lopez, top ranked professional boxer, Danny Lopez's brother ==See also== Utah * List of census-designated places in Utah ==References== 22em ==Further reading== *"Fort Duchesne", Utah History Encyclopedia ==External links== Fort Duchesne, Utah * Gary Lee Walker, research on Fort Duchesne, Utah, MSS 6856 at [https://sites.lib.byu.edu/sc/ L.
