It is the highest town in Sardinia, and situated among fine scenery with some chestnut woods. Fonni is a winter sports centre with a ski lift to Monte Spada and Bruncu Spina. ==Etymology== The term "Fonni/-e" probably derives from the Latin fons, meaning "fountain" or "god of the sources". In fact the village contains numerous spring water fountains. ==Climate== {{Weather box |width = auto |location = Fonni (1961β1990 normals) |metric first = yes |single line = yes |Jan high C = 6.6 |Feb high C = 6.9 |Mar high C = 8.9 |Apr high C = 11.5 |May high C = 16.3 |Jun high C = 21.2 |Jul high C = 25.8 |Aug high C = 25.5 |Sep high C = 21.7 |Oct high C = 16.4 |Nov high C = 10.9 |Dec high C = 8.1 |year high C = 15.0 |Jan low C = 1.5 |Feb low C = 1.2 |Mar low C = 2.5 |Apr low C = 4.6 |May low C = 8.5 |Jun low C = 12.6 |Jul low C = 16.4 |Aug low C = 16.3 |Sep low C = 13.7 |Oct low C = 9.7 |Nov low C = 5.4 |Dec low C = 2.8 |year low C = 7.9 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation mm = 101.6 |Feb precipitation mm = 93.2 |Mar precipitation mm = 76.9 |Apr precipitation mm = 81.1 |May precipitation mm = 60.7 |Jun precipitation mm = 31.4 |Jul precipitation mm = 13.2 |Aug precipitation mm = 15.6 |Sep precipitation mm = 48.8 |Oct precipitation mm = 81.1 |Nov precipitation mm = 97.0 |Dec precipitation mm = 100.1 |year precipitation mm = 800.7 | unit precipitation days = 1.0 mm | Jan precipitation days = 9.9 | Feb precipitation days = 10.0 | Mar precipitation days = 9.4 | Apr precipitation days = 10.5 | May precipitation days = 7.4 | Jun precipitation days = 4.2 | Jul precipitation days = 1.6 | Aug precipitation days = 2.4 | Sep precipitation days = 4.8 | Oct precipitation days = 8.8 | Nov precipitation days = 9.7 | Dec precipitation days = 9.9 | year precipitation days = 88.6 | Jan humidity = 86 | Feb humidity = 88 | Mar humidity = 83 | Apr humidity = 81 | May humidity = 81 | Jun humidity = 77 | Jul humidity = 64 | Aug humidity = 69 | Sep humidity = 75 | Oct humidity = 82 | Nov humidity = 88 | Dec humidity = 86 | year humidity = |source 1 = NOAA }} ==Culture== The local costumes are extremely picturesque, and are well seen on the day of St John the Baptist, the patron saint. The men's costume is similar to that worn in the district generally; the linen trousers are long and black gaiters are worn. The women wear a white chemise; over that a very small corselet, and over that a red jacket with blue and black velvet facings. The skirt is brown above and red below, with a blue band between the two colours; it is accordion-pleated. Two identical skirts are often worn, one above the other. The unmarried girls wear white kerchiefs, the married women black. ==Neighborhoods== Neighborhoods in Fonni are called "Rioni" of these the oldest is called su piggiu or the peak, probably derived by the fact this is the highest and first layer of the village. Others include puppuai and cresiedda to the south, and logotza to the east.
