In April 2016, the [[US Environmental Protection Agency]] added the Old American Zinc Fairmont City site to the [[National Priorities List]] following the Illinois EPA discovering high levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium and zinc in soil samples. In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 116.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.7 males. The median income for a household in the village was $27,070, and the median income for a family was $31,296. Males had a median income of $21,766 versus $21,576 for females.
