'''Exmore''' is the largest town in [[Northampton County, Virginia|Northampton County]] on the [[Eastern Shore of Virginia|Eastern Shore]] of the [[U.S. state]] of [[Virginia]]. The Virginia Barrier Island Center (BIC) offers exhaustive information on the local culture and history. Founded in 1996 and opened to visitors in 2002 on the former site of the Almshouse Farm in [[Machipongo, Virginia|Machipongo]] 10 miles south of the town of Exmore and 20 miles north of the [[Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel]], the BIC is a cultural center, a museum and a meeting and event place. Its mission is to preserve and perpetuate the culture and history of Virginia's barrier islands through education and the collection and interpretation of artifacts. As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,136 people, 475 households, and 317 families living in the town. The [[population density]] was 1,405.5 people per square mile (541.5/km<sup>2</sup>). There were 524 housing units at an average density of 648.3 per square mile (249.8/km<sup>2</sup>). The racial makeup of the town was 62.85% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 33.80% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.44% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.26% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.09% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.23% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.32% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.46% of the population.

There were 475 households, out of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 21.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,343, and the median income for a family was $34,816. Males had a median income of $25,234 versus $19,350 for females.
