==History==
Exline was surveyed by J.J. Hall in 1873 for David Exline, who settled there and established a successful dry-goods business, and it was incorporated in 1904. Initially, the town was known as Caldwell City or Bob Town. Exline grew considerably with the coal boom. Geologists have named the Exline [[cyclothem]] after the town. This rock group extends from Iowa into Illinois and contains the Exline [[limestone]], named after the exposure on a creek bank, 1.5 miles south of the southwest corner of Exline.<ref>Grace C. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|racial]] makeup of the city was 96.9% [[White Americans|White]], 0.0% [[African Americans|Black or African American]], 0.0% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 0.6% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.0% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 0.0% from other races and 2.5% from two or more races. The racial makeup of the city was 98.95% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.52% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]] and 0.52% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]].
