The [[Wikipedia:TeX markup]] support has, so far, worked excellently. It fixes one problem, and fixes it well, whilst allowing migration to more fancy systems such as [[MathML]] in the future.

It has been proposed on the mailing list that essentially the same technique used with TeX be used to implement embedded [[GNU LilyPond]] markup in articles, presumably in <pre><music> </music></pre> tags. This will then be able to be upgraded to generate music markup, [[MIDI file]]s, [[Ogg]] [[Vorbis]] files, et caetera later on.

Can't latex render music as well? I know it would be strange to denote music with math tags, but tex renders many characters very well. In fact i think there is something called musiX-tex.

Reading the essay at the lilypond projects page i seen now where that fails. Still instead of outputing musiX-tex like it did in 96, LilyPond does output plain tex eventually. I don't know how the wikimedia engine renders tex as a png anyways. Does it just call latex2html to generate the images? if so the implementation of a music tag based system shouldn't be to difficult. I want to hear from people who would actually write music and add it to wikipedia.
