As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,092 people, 382 households, and 297 families residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|185.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 408 housing units at an average density of {{convert|69.1|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 80.13% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 17.03% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.46% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.27% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.55% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.56% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] people of any race were 2.38% of the population.

There were 382 households, out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Emerson has served as the backdrop for many film and television production scenes. The television mini-series ''[[Manhunt: Unabomber]]'' was filmed in Emerson, along with portions of the film ''[[The 5th Wave (film)|The 5th Wave]]''. Old Alabama Road in Emerson has appeared in several ''Fast & Furious'' movies.
