==History==
Elgin was [[plat]]ted in 1887 when the railroad was extended to that point. The [[population density]] was {{convert|931.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 364 housing units at an average density of {{convert|512.7|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 98.5% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.8% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 0.8% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.9% of the population.

There were 307 households, of which 21.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.8% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.75.

The median age in the city was 49.8 years. 21% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16.7% were from 25 to 44; 26.3% were from 45 to 64; and 31% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.7% male and 53.3% female.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.59% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], and 0.41% from two or more races.

There were 333 households, out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 35.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 24.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 20.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males.

As of 2000 the median income for a household in the city was $29,833, and the median income for a family was $38,250. Males had a median income of $26,827 versus $17,361 for females.
