'''Eid''' is a [[List of former municipalities of Norway|former municipality]] in the [[Counties of Norway|county]] of [[Sogn og Fjordane]], [[Norway]]. It was located in the [[Districts of Norway|traditional district]] of [[Nordfjord]]. The village of [[Nordfjordeid]] was the [[administrative center]] of the municipality. Other larger villages in Eid included [[Mogrenda]], [[Stårheim]], [[Haugen, Sogn og Fjordane|Haugen]], [[Kjølsdalen]], [[Heggjabygda]], and [[Lote, Norway|Lote]].

At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the {{convert|469|km2|adj=on}} municipality is the 215th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Eid is the 168th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 6,157. Eid was known for its [[opera]], [[fjord horse]]s, [[shopping]], and [[hiking]] opportunities. As in the rest of the region, [[agriculture]] was very important here, but trade and [[Industrial sector|industry]] were also important. ''[http://www.frislid.no/ Frislid Konfeksjon]'' ([[textile]]s) and the Hellesøy Nordfjord [[shipyard]] among others are located in Eid.

[[Nordfjordeid]]'s schools include the [[folk high school]], which offers courses linked to [[Fjord horse]]s and provides the only [[circus]] [[education]] in Norway. There is also the Norwegian Fjord Horse Centre ''(Norsk Fjordhestsenter)'' in Eid. Eid was established as a [[List of municipalities of Norway|municipality]] on 1 January 1838 (see [[formannskapsdistrikt]] law). The original municipality was identical to the Eid [[Church of Norway|parish]] ''([[prestegjeld]])'' with the sub-parishes ({{lang|no|sokn}}) of [[Hornindal Municipality|Hornindal]], Eid, and [[Stårheim]].<ref name="Em">{{Cite web |last=Natvik |first=Oddvar |date=9 February 2005 |title=Some historical data on the 26 Kommunes |url=http://www.sf-f.kommune.no/sff/emigration3.nsf/enduser?readform |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110724180634/http://www.sf-f.kommune.no/sff/emigration3.nsf/enduser?readform |archive-date=24 July 2011}}</ref>  On 1 January 1867, the eastern district of [[Hornindal Municipality|Hornindal]] was separated from Eid to form its own municipality. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [[Schei Committee]]. On 1 January 1965, the neighboring [[Davik Municipality]] and [[Hornindal Municipality]] were dissolved and split up among their neighbors. Eid Municipality gained all of Davik that was north of the [[Nordfjorden (Vestland)|Nordfjorden]] and east of and including the village of Lefdal. (Population in that area was 654.<ref name="Dag" />)  All of Hornindal municipality west of and including the villages of Navelsaker and Holmøyvik (population: 310) was also merged into Eid. After this merger, Eid's total population was 4,532.<ref name="Dag" />  At this point, Eid gained a third sub-parish from the former municipality of Davik: [[Kjølsdalen]]. Then on 1 January 1992, the village of [[Lote, Norway|Lote]] and its surrounding area (population: 152) was transferred from [[Gloppen Municipality]] to Eid.<ref name="Dag" />

===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the [[Eidsfjorden (Sogn og Fjordane)|Eidsfjorden]] ({{langx|non|Øygir}}) since it is a central geographical feature of the area. The fjord is a branch off the main [[Nordfjorden (Vestland)|Nordfjorden]]. The fjord name likely comes from an old river name (now called ''Eidselva''). The name of the river was probably derived from the word {{lang|non|aug}} or {{wikt-lang|non|ǫfugr}} which both mean "turned the wrong way" or "backwards". This is likely because the river Eidselva [[meander]]s back and forth and from certain points it can seem to run backwards. ===Coat of arms===
The [[coat of arms]] was granted on 26 April 1986 and they were in use until 1 January 2020 when the municipality ceased to exist. The official [[blazon]] is ''"[[Gules]], a horse head [[couped]] [[Or (heraldry)|Or]]"'' ({{langx|no|På raud grunn eit gull hestehovud}}). This means the arms have a red [[field (heraldry)|field]] (background) and the [[charge (heraldry)|charge]] is the head of a [[fjord horse]] (''Fjording''), cut cleanly at the neck. The charge has a [[tincture (heraldry)|tincture]] of [[Or (heraldry)|Or]] which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The region is well known for its own breed of horses, called the [[Fjord horse|Fjording]], that are very common and popular in the area. The Fjording is characterised by its white and black [[mane (horse)|mane]]. The arms were designed by Inge Rotevatn. While it existed, this municipality was responsible for [[primary education]] (through 10th grade), outpatient [[Health care|health services]], [[old age|senior citizen]] services, [[unemployment]], [[Social work|social services]], [[zoning]], [[economic development]], and municipal [[road]]s. During its existence, this municipality was governed by a [[Municipal council (Norway)|municipal council]] of [[Direct election|directly elected]] representatives. ==Geography==

The municipality of Eid was located in the northernmost part of [[Sogn og Fjordane]] county. It was located along the northern shores of the [[Nordfjorden (Sogn og Fjordane)|Nordfjorden]] and it surrounded the Eidsfjorden branch off of the main Nordfjorden. Eid Municipality was bordered to the west by [[Vågsøy Municipality]], to the south by [[Bremanger Municipality]] and [[Gloppen Municipality]], to the east by [[Stryn Municipality]] and [[Hornindal Municipality]], and to the north by [[Volda Municipality]] and [[Vanylven Municipality]] (both in [[Møre og Romsdal]] county).  

The lake [[Hornindalsvatnet]], the deepest lake in [[Europe]], was partially located in Eid municipality.
