At the 2000 [[census]],<ref name="GR2" /> there were 830 people, 307 households and 228 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|670.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 357 housing units at an average density of {{convert|288.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 92.26% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 6.87% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.41% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.12% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.48% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.24% of the population.

There were 307 households, of which 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 43.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.07.

Eastover is the site of [[McEntire Joint National Guard Base]] and the headquarters for the [[South Carolina Air National Guard]].

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company's Wateree Station 700 megawatt coal power plant is located here.
