The population was 2,239 at the 2020 census. The city is at the end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix at the mouth of the Jordan River. The corporate headquarters of EJ, an international company formerly known as East Jordan Iron Works, is located in East Jordan. EJ was founded in East Jordan in 1883. ==History== The area was first settled by Canadian William Empey in 1873. He built the first store here in 1874 at the mouth of the Jordan River at the southernmost point of Lake Charlevoix. He became the first postmaster when the post office opened on May 31, 1878. The community absorbed the nearby village of South Arm and incorporated as the village of East Jordan in 1887. It incorporated as a city in 1911. East Jordan grew quickly, and by 1890, it boasted a large ironworks company now known as EJ. The city was serviced by two railroads. With these two railroad connections, and the ability to ship cargo up Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan, East Jordan quickly grew into a major manufacturing center. To this day, four industrial corporations still operate within the town. In 1899, the Detroit and Charlevoix Railroad built their mainline through the East side of the city, and in 1901, the East Jordan and Southern Railroad began operations on the western end of the city. In 1932, the Detroit and Charlevoix was abandoned, and the East Jordan and Southern closed in 1961 after the East Jordan Iron Works ended shipping by rail. East Jordan contains two listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The East Jordan Lumber Company Store Building and the Votruba Block were both built in 1899 and are located next to each other in the city's downtown area. ==Geography== According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.92 sqmi, of which 3.00 sqmi is land and 0.92 sqmi (23.47%) is water. The city boundaries contain an exclave which is used to incorporate the East Jordan City Airport to the southeast of the city. ===Major highways=== * enters the city from the east and has its western terminus at M-66. within East Jordan. * runs south–north through the western portion of the city. * is a county-designated highway that runs through the center of the city and briefly concurrent with M-32. ===Climate=== This climatic region has large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, East Jordan has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps. {{Weather box |location = East Jordan, Michigan (1991–2020 normals, extremes 1926–present) |single line = yes |width = auto |Jan record high F = 55 |Feb record high F = 65 |Mar record high F = 87 |Apr record high F = 90 |May record high F = 97 |Jun record high F = 102 |Jul record high F = 103 |Aug record high F = 100 |Sep record high F = 97 |Oct record high F = 88 |Nov record high F = 78 |Dec record high F = 65 |year record high F = 103 |Jan high F = 30.4 |Feb high F = 32.9 |Mar high F = 42.9 |Apr high F = 56.0 |May high F = 70.0 |Jun high F = 79.2 |Jul high F = 82.6 |Aug high F = 80.9 |Sep high F = 73.7 |Oct high F = 60.3 |Nov high F = 46.5 |Dec high F = 35.4 |year high F = 57.6 |Jan mean F = 22.7 |Feb mean F = 23.6 |Mar mean F = 32.0 |Apr mean F = 43.6 |May mean F = 55.7 |Jun mean F = 65.0 |Jul mean F = 68.9 |Aug mean F = 67.4 |Sep mean F = 60.6 |Oct mean F = 49.4 |Nov mean F = 38.4 |Dec mean F = 28.8 |year mean F = 46.3 |Jan low F = 15.1 |Feb low F = 14.2 |Mar low F = 21.1 |Apr low F = 31.2 |May low F = 41.4 |Jun low F = 50.8 |Jul low F = 55.2 |Aug low F = 53.8 |Sep low F = 47.5 |Oct low F = 38.4 |Nov low F = 30.3 |Dec low F = 22.3 |year low F = 35.1 |Jan record low F = -36 |Feb record low F = -41 |Mar record low F = -29 |Apr record low F = -7 |May record low F = 13 |Jun record low F = 26 |Jul record low F = 33 |Aug record low F = 30 |Sep record low F = 23 |Oct record low F = 15 |Nov record low F = -14 |Dec record low F = -31 |year record low F = -41 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 2.04 |Feb precipitation inch = 1.34 |Mar precipitation inch = 1.54 |Apr precipitation inch = 2.52 |May precipitation inch = 2.98 |Jun precipitation inch = 3.15 |Jul precipitation inch = 2.90 |Aug precipitation inch = 3.26 |Sep precipitation inch = 3.74 |Oct precipitation inch = 4.37 |Nov precipitation inch = 2.76 |Dec precipitation inch = 2.24 |year precipitation inch = 32.84 |Jan snow inch = 37.4 |Feb snow inch = 23.1 |Mar snow inch = 11.0 |Apr snow inch = 4.6 |May snow inch = 0.0 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.7 |Nov snow inch = 10.0 |Dec snow inch = 35.4 |year snow inch = 122.2 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 17.3 |Feb precipitation days = 12.4 |Mar precipitation days = 9.5 |Apr precipitation days = 11.4 |May precipitation days = 11.5 |Jun precipitation days = 10.4 |Jul precipitation days = 9.8 |Aug precipitation days = 10.0 |Sep precipitation days = 11.3 |Oct precipitation days = 14.6 |Nov precipitation days = 14.6 |Dec precipitation days = 16.1 |year precipitation days = 148.9 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 15.6 |Feb snow days = 11.0 |Mar snow days = 5.5 |Apr snow days = 2.2 |May snow days = 0.1 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.4 |Nov snow days = 5.0 |Dec snow days = 12.5 |year snow days = 52.3 |source 1 = NOAA }} ==Demographics== ===2010 census=== As of the census of 2010, there were 2,351 people, 952 households, and 613 families residing in the city.
