It includes the unincorporated communities of Mechanicsville, [[Landisville, Pennsylvania|Landisville]], Bamford, Centerville, Chestnut Ridge, Rohrerstown, Donerville, Chestnut View, and Wheatland, as well as part of [[Salunga, Pennsylvania|Salunga]].

The population density was {{convert|1,011.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 8,761 housing units at an average density of {{convert|414.2|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the township was 93.45% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.51% [[African American (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.11% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 2.56% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.51% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.86% from two or more races. 2.78% of the population were [[Hispanics in the United States|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 8,552 households, out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the township the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $54,431, and the median income for a family was $68,965. Males had a median income of $43,958 versus $29,496 for females.
