Diboll is located in southwestern Angelina County. [[U.S. Route 59 in Texas|U.S. Route 59]] (future [[Interstate 69 in Texas|Interstate 69]]) passes through the city, leading north {{convert|11|mi}} to [[Lufkin, Texas|Lufkin]], the county seat, and south {{convert|109|mi}} to [[Houston]].

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 5,470 people, 1,424 households, and 1,107 families residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|1,141.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,582 housing units at an average density of {{convert|330.3|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the city was 53.67% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 24.13% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.53% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.05% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.05% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 19.40% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.16% from two or more races.
