The population was estimated to be 46,118,554 in 2024<ref>https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2025-02-24/46-1-million-people-were-counted-in-iraqs-first-census-in-nearly-40-years</ref> [[Iraqi Turkmen|Turkmens]] (3 million), [[Assyrian people|Assyrians]] (0.5 million), [[Yazidis]] (500,000), [[Armenian people|Armenians]], [[Marsh Arabs]], and [[Shabak people|Shabaks]] (250,000). Other minorities include [[Mandaeans]] (3,000), [[Dom people|Roma]] (50,000) and [[Circassians in Iraq|Circassians]] (2,000).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Minorities in Iraq - European Research Service |url=http://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/BRIE/2015/548988/EPRS_BRI(2015)548988_REV1_EN.pdf}}</ref> The most spoken languages are [[Mesopotamian Arabic]], [[Kurdish languages|Kurdish]], Assyrian [[Eastern Aramaic languages|Syriac]] and [[Iraqi Turkmen#Language|Iraqi Turkmen]] dialects. The percentages of different ethno-religious groups residing in Iraq vary from source to source due to the last Iraqi census having taken place over 30 years ago. Which showed that the Iraqi population has risen to about 46 million and 118 thousands. Iraq's dominant ethnic group is [[Arabs]], who account for more than three-quarters of the population.

According to the [[The World Factbook|CIA World Factbook]], citing a 1987 Iraqi government estimate, the population of Iraq is formed of 75-80% Arabs (including [[Marsh Arabs]]) followed by 15-20% [[Kurds in Iraq|Kurds]] and other minorities form 5% of the country's population, including the [[Iraqi Turkmen|Turkmen]], [[Kaka'i]], [[Bedouins]], [[Gypsies in Iraq|Roma]], [[Assyrians in Iraq|Assyrians]], [[Circassians in Iraq|Circassians]], [[Mandaeans]], and [[Ajam of Iraq|Persians]].<ref name="TWFIraq">{{cite web|url=https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/iraq/ |title=Iraq|work=[[The World Factbook]]|date=22 June 2014}}</ref>

==Languages==

[[Arabic]] and [[Kurdish languages|Kurdish]] are the two official languages of Iraq. Arabic is taught across all schools in Iraq, however in the north the Kurdish language is the most spoken. [[Eastern Aramaic languages]], such as [[Syriac language|Syriac]] and [[Mandaic language|Mandaic]] are spoken, as well as the Iraqi Turkmen language, and various other indigenous languages.

Kurdish, including several dialects, is the second largest language and has [[regional language]] status in the north of the country. Aramaic, in antiquity spoken throughout the whole country, is now only spoken by the Assyrian minority, in distinct dialects that differ from church affiliation and geographic origin. The [[Iraqi Turkmen#Language|Iraqi Turkmen dialect]] is spoken in parts of northern Iraq, numerous [[languages of the Caucasus]] are also spoken by minorities, notably the Chechen community.

The CIA [[The World Factbook|World Factbook]] estimated in 2015 that between 95-98% of Iraqis followed [[Islam]], with 61-64% being Shia and 29-34% being Sunni. While there has been voluntary relocation of many Christian families to northern Iraq, recent reporting indicates that the overall Christian population may have dropped by as much as 50 percent since the fall of [[Saddam Hussein]] in 2003, with many fleeing to Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon (2010 estimate).<ref name="TWFIraq"/> The percentage of Christians has fallen from 6% in 1991 or 1.5 million to about one third of this. Nearly all Iraqi Kurds identify as [[Sunni Muslim]]s. A 2014 survey in Iraq concluded that "98% of Kurds in Iraq identified themselves as Sunnis and only 2% identified as Shias".<ref name="pewresearch.org">{{Cite web|url=http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/08/20/who-are-the-iraqi-kurds/|title=Who are the Iraqi Kurds?|date=20 August 2014 }}</ref> The religious differences between Sunni [[Arabs]] and Sunni Kurds are small.
