==History==
Deerwood was [[plat]]ted in February 1892. Deerwood was incorporated in October 1909. The city was named for the abundant deer in the nearby woods. Deerwood is located along Minnesota State Highways [[Minnesota State Highway 6|6]] and [[Minnesota State Highway 210|210]]. Other routes include County Roads 8, 10, and 12.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|357.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 319 housing units at an average density of {{convert|214.1|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 94.9% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.9% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.7% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.2% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.4% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.9% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.5% of the population.

There were 226 households, of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.3% were non-families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.95.

The median age in the city was 39.7 years. 28% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.9% were from 25 to 44; 26.6% were from 45 to 64; and 18.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.5% male and 51.5% female.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 590 people, 256 households, and 153 families living in the city.  The population density was {{convert|431.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 309 housing units at an average density of {{convert|225.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 97.12% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.02% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.19% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.17% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.17% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.34% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.51% of the population.

There were 256 households, out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 23.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.9% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.5 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,069, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $27,813 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $15,697.  About 8.4% of families and 13.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 18.3% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over.

==Arts and culture==
 
The [[Deerwood Auditorium]] is a community center built as a [[Works Progress Administration]] project. The auditorium, built in 1935, is listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]], a rare surviving example of federal relief architecture in Minnesota.
