The population was 3,010 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]]. Darien lies in the southwestern part of Genesee County, southwest of [[Batavia, New York|Batavia]].

== History ==

During the early historic period, the area was occupied by the [[Seneca people]], and was referred to by them as ''O-so-on-to-geh'', or "Place where turkeys are found".

The area was first settled ''circa'' 1803 and was known at first as '''South Pembroke'''. The town of Darien was founded in 1832 from the south part of the town of [[Pembroke, New York|Pembroke]]. The early town was agricultural, supplying food products to nearby urban areas, such as [[Buffalo, New York|Buffalo]].

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|47.6|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|47.5|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}, or 0.13%, is water.

The western town line is the town of [[Alden, New York|Alden]] in [[Erie County, New York|Erie County]], and the southern town boundary is the town of [[Bennington, New York|Bennington]] in [[Wyoming County, New York|Wyoming County]].

[[U.S. Route 20 in New York|US Route 20]] (Broadway) passes across the town and intersects [[New York State Route 77|NY-77]] at Darien Center. The northern terminus of [[New York State Route 238|NY-238]] (Attica Road) is in Darien. [[New York State Route 33|NY-33]] crosses the northwest corner of Darien.

The population density was {{convert|64.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,125 housing units at an average density of {{convert|23.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 99.12% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.10% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.29% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.03% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 0.46% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.23% of the population.

There were 1,064 households, out of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.7% were non-families. 15.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the town, the age distribution of the population shows 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 109.1 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $48,844, and the median income for a family was $50,844. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $23,278 for females. About 1.8% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 2.4% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 100 and older
