The town was formed, along with the county, in 1796 as one of the original towns in the county, but was not settled until ''circa'' 1804.  Daniel P. Faulkner, a prominent citizen, was popularly called "Captain Dan".

The Town of Dansville was used to form, in whole or part, the Towns of [[Cohocton (town), New York|Cohocton]],  [[Howard, New York|Howard]] (both in 1812), [[Wayland (town), New York|Wayland]] (1848), and [[Fremont, Steuben County, New York|Fremont]] (1854).  In 1822, part of the town, including the [[Dansville, Livingston County, New York|Village of Dansville]], was annexed to the [[Sparta, New York|Town of Sparta]] in [[Livingston County, New York|Livingston County]].

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|48.1|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|48.0|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}  (0.15%) is water.

The ''[[Dansville, Livingston County, New York|Village of Dansville]]'' is located north of this town, but is in [[Livingston County, New York|Livingston County]].  Livingston County also forms the north and part of the western border of Dansville. [[Allegany County, New York|Allegany County]] forms the remainder of the western town line.

[[New York State Route 36]] is an important north-south highway in Dansville.  [[Interstate 390 (New York)|Interstate 390]] passes through the northeast corner of the town.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,977 people, 735 households, and 554 families residing in the town.  The population density was {{convert|41.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 833 housing units at an average density of {{convert|17.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 96.71% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.76% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.86% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.15% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.05% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.30% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.16% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.47% of the population.

There were 735 households, out of which 38.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 18.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.1 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,875, and the median income for a family was $40,909. Males had a median income of $30,274 versus $24,118 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $15,094.  About 7.6% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 11.1% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
