As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,378 people, 608 households, and 432 families residing in the township. The population density was {{convert|20.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,605 housing units at an average density of {{convert|23.5|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the township was 98.62% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.07% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.07% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.15% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.09% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.65% of the population.

There were 608 households, out of which 19.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.66.

In the township the population was spread out, with 19.9% under the age of 18, 3.3% from 18 to 24, 20.1% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 25.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 108.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $27,048, and the median income for a family was $30,817. Males had a median income of $26,563 versus $22,778 for females. About 11.7% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
