Cumberland City is the site of a [[Tennessee Valley Authority|TVA]] [[Cumberland Fossil Plant]] along the [[Cumberland River]] that provides 2.6 gigawatts of electric power to much of the area, including the cities of Clarksville in [[Montgomery County, Tennessee|Montgomery County]] and [[Dickson, Tennessee|Dickson]] in [[Dickson County, Tennessee|Dickson County]].

The power plant's stacks (some of the tallest structures in the state) can be seen for at least {{convert|30|mi|km}} away.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 316 people, 139 households, and 89 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|65.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 178 housing units at an average density of {{convert|37.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 87.34% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 7.91% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.63% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 2.22% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.90% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.22% of the population.

There were 139 households, out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.80.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.5% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older.
