As people began to populate the new community, the name of Crooksbury was chosen, but that only lasted for a short time. This was to honor Colonel William Crooks, an official of the railroad company. Then it was permanently changed to Crookston. |ref=2012 Oak Ridger / Crookston Times article}}</ref> By the end of that year, the town had a jail, graded streets, and a few plank sidewalks. Soon, it was decided that the town needed a new name. Two factions emerged supporting two different names. One wished to honor the town's first mayor, Captain Ellerey C. Davis, with the name Davis. Another group picked the name Crookston to honor Colonel William Crooks, a soldier and railroad builder. The name was reportedly chosen by coin toss. Soon, Scandinavian, French-Canadian, and German immigrants began populating Crookston. At one point, eight different railroad lines reached the town, and it became a center of commerce and manufacturing. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.115 sqmi, all land. Crookston sits in the fertile Red River Valley, once a part of glacial Lake Agassiz. As Lake Agassiz receded, it left behind rich mineral deposits. This made the area around Crookston prime for agricultural uses. Grains such as wheat and other crops, including sugar beets and potatoes, grow well in the area around Crookston. Crookston has a relatively flat landscape. The Red Lake River flows through the city and makes several twists and turns (oxbows). The riverbank has eroded somewhat. U.S. Highways 2 and 75 and Minnesota State Highways 9 and 102 are four of the main routes in the community. Crookston is the northern terminus of the Agassiz Recreational Trail, a 53-mile multi-use trail built on an abandoned railroad grade that has its southern terminus at Ulen. ===Climate=== {{Weather box | location = Crookston, Minnesota, 1991β2020 normals, extremes 1890βpresent | single line = Y | collapsed = Yes | width = auto | Jan record high F = 57 | Feb record high F = 63 | Mar record high F = 78 | Apr record high F = 96 | May record high F = 101 | Jun record high F = 102 | Jul record high F = 105 | Aug record high F = 104 | Sep record high F = 99 | Oct record high F = 89 | Nov record high F = 73 | Dec record high F = 56 | year record high F = 105 | Jan avg record high F = 37.7 | Feb avg record high F = 39.4 | Mar avg record high F = 54.2 | Apr avg record high F = 74.2 | May avg record high F = 85.4 | Jun avg record high F = 89.6 | Jul avg record high F = 90.7 | Aug avg record high F = 91.6 | Sep avg record high F = 88.4 | Oct avg record high F = 77.2 | Nov avg record high F = 56.3 | Dec avg record high F = 40.7 | year avg record high F = 93.9 | Jan high F = 15.8 | Feb high F = 20.4 | Mar high F = 34.0 | Apr high F = 51.3 | May high F = 66.6 | Jun high F = 76.0 | Jul high F = 80.3 | Aug high F = 79.6 | Sep high F = 70.4 | Oct high F = 54.1 | Nov high F = 36.2 | Dec high F = 22.4 | year high F = | Jan mean F = 6.1 | Feb mean F = 10.1 | Mar mean F = 24.4 | Apr mean F = 40.7 | May mean F = 54.7 | Jun mean F = 65.1 | Jul mean F = 69.1 | Aug mean F = 67.4 | Sep mean F = 58.2 | Oct mean F = 43.7 | Nov mean F = 27.5 | Dec mean F = 13.8 | year mean F = | Jan low F = β3.6 | Feb low F = -0.2 | Mar low F = 14.8 | Apr low F = 30.1 | May low F = 42.8 | Jun low F = 54.3 | Jul low F = 57.8 | Aug low F = 55.2 | Sep low F = 46.0 | Oct low F = 33.3 | Nov low F = 18.8 | Dec low F = 5.2 | year low F = | Jan avg record low F = -27.9 | Feb avg record low F = -23.0 | Mar avg record low F = -10.8 | Apr avg record low F = 14.5 | May avg record low F = 27.8 | Jun avg record low F = 41.1 | Jul avg record low F = 46.0 | Aug avg record low F = 42.8 | Sep avg record low F = 30.4 | Oct avg record low F = 18.3 | Nov avg record low F = -1.6 | Dec avg record low F = -17.2 | year avg record low F = -28.4 | Jan record low F = β44 | Feb record low F = β51 | Mar record low F = β39 | Apr record low F = β10 | May record low F = 6 | Jun record low F = 27 | Jul record low F = 38 | Aug record low F = 31 | Sep record low F = 11 | Oct record low F = β2 | Nov record low F = β30 | Dec record low F = β38 | year record low F = β | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 0.51 | Feb precipitation inch = 0.53 | Mar precipitation inch = 0.73 | Apr precipitation inch = 1.27 | May precipitation inch = 2.75 | Jun precipitation inch = 4.15 | Jul precipitation inch = 3.27 | Aug precipitation inch = 2.97 | Sep precipitation inch = 2.60 | Oct precipitation inch = 2.09 | Nov precipitation inch = 0.82 | Dec precipitation inch = 0.74 | year precipitation inch = | Jan snow inch = | Feb snow inch = | Mar snow inch = | Apr snow inch = | May snow inch = | Jun snow inch = | Jul snow inch = | Aug snow inch = | Sep snow inch = | Oct snow inch = | Nov snow inch = | Dec snow inch = | year snow inch = | unit precipitation days = 0.01 in | Jan precipitation days = 6.4 | Feb precipitation days = 5.8 | Mar precipitation days = 5.9 | Apr precipitation days = 6.2 | May precipitation days = 10.0 | Jun precipitation days = 10.7 | Jul precipitation days = 9.3 | Aug precipitation days = 8.2 | Sep precipitation days = 8.1 | Oct precipitation days = 7.3 | Nov precipitation days = 5.7 | Dec precipitation days = 7.3 | year precipitation days = | unit snow days = | Jan snow days = | Feb snow days = | Mar snow days = | Apr snow days = | May snow days = | Jun snow days = | Jul snow days = | Aug snow days = | Sep snow days = | Oct snow days = | Nov snow days = | Dec snow days = | source 1 = NOAA<ref name= NOAA>{{cite web |url=https://www.weather.gov/wrh/Climate?wfo=fgf |title=NowData -
