Cottageville is in eastern Colleton County, along [[U.S. Route 17 Alternate (South Carolina)|U.S. Route 17 Alt]]. [[Walterboro, South Carolina|Walterboro]], the [[county seat]], is {{Convert|11|mi}} to the west, and [[Summerville, South Carolina|Summerville]] is {{convert|20|mi}} to the east.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 707 people, 274 households, and 206 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|222.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 310 housing units at an average density of {{convert|97.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 85.71% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 11.88% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.42% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.42% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.14% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.28% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.13% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.42% of the population.

There were 274 households, out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $38,281, and the median income for a family was $44,583. Males had a median income of $29,886 versus $22,019 for females. == History ==
